The Health Professions Council (HPC) is a regulatory body for health professionals, and was set up to protect the public. Podiatry is regulated and the title podiatrist/chiropodist is protected so a practitioner must be registered with the HPC. To do this, they keep a register of health professionals who meet their standards for their training, professional skills, behavior and health.

The Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists is the Professional Body and Trade Union for registered podiatrists. Membership is restricted to those qualified for registration and the Society represents around 10,000 private practitioners, NHS podiatrists and students.
The Society monitors standards of undergraduate education and provides opportunities for continuing professional development through its four faculties which are: the Faculty of Undergraduate Education; the Faculty of Podiatric Medicine; the Faculty of Podiatric Surgery and the Faculty of Clinical Administration & Development.
