1. Wash your feet and between the toes every day in warm water using a mild soap. Do not soak them, as this might destroy the natural oils in your skin as this may cause them to become excessively dry.
2. Dry your feet thoroughly, especially in between the toes.
3. If your skin is dry, apply a foot moisturising cream to the sole and heel areas, except for between the toes.
4. Lightly apply a foot powder.
5. File hard skin gently with a pumice stone. If the hard skin is painful, consult a registered podiatrist.
6. Toenails should be cut straight and across but not too short on the sides as this can lead to an ingrowing nail. Also file down any edges to prevent snagging.
7. Inspect your feet regularly. Particular attention should be given to changes in colour and temperature of your feet. Check for blisters, cuts and inflammation or toenail problems.
8. Keep feet warm, and exercise to improve circulation.
9. Socks should be clean, dry, changed daily and not be too tight around the ankle as this can restrict circulation.

11. Avoid walking barefoot in public places, as your feet are more prone to injury and infection. Wearing flip flops can reduce the risk of picking up infections such as verrucae and Athlete’s foot.
12. Seek prompt treatment for any minor cuts and breaks in the skin, and for any usual changes in colour or temperature. This is particularly important if you have diabetes.
